A popular initiative named after the glaciers led to a law that sets net zero emissions by 2050. Voters approved it with 59%.

In 2019 a popular initiative, known as the Glacier Initiative, proposed writing a net-zero target for 2050 into the Swiss constitution, with a ban on fossil fuels. Parliament answered with the Climate and Innovation Act, which keeps the 2050 target without the ban, and the initiative was withdrawn in its favour.
Opponents forced a referendum. On 18 June 2023, 59.07% of voters approved the law, with a turnout of 42.54%.
