A quarter in ten years

After a winter with little snow and a heatwave in June, Swiss glaciers lost 3.0% of their volume in 2024/25, the fourth-largest loss since detailed measurements began in the 1950s.

About 45.1 km³ of ice remain, 30 km³ less than in 2000. The decade 2015–2025 removed 24% of the ice, the largest ten-year loss on record.

Because so much ice is already gone, the total volume of meltwater released in 2025 was only about average. GLAMOS says the peak of meltwater release from Swiss glaciers has likely passed.
